2019 Travel Stats
We were recently listening to the Extra Pack of Peanuts Travel Podcast episode of their 2019 travel stats and it inspired us to figure out our own travel stats for 2019. While we don't travel quite as much as they do, we still had fun going through all the numbers.
Regions
Last year, our travels took us to 1 continent, 2 countries, 15 states, and 9 national parks. We didn't leave North America in 2019 since we were only in the US and Canada. Within the US, we visited:
- Ohio
- North Carolina
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- Georgia (Jacqueline only)
- West Virginia
- Virginia
- Delaware
- Kentucky
- Indiana
- Minnesota
- North Dakota
- Montana
- Wisconsin
- California
Of those states, I visited 2 new states—Delaware and North Dakota—and Anthony visited 6 new states—Delaware, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Wisconsin, and California.
We visited 13 national parks:
- Congaree
- Theodore Roosevelt
- Glacier
- Waterton Lakes
- Banff
- Yoho
- Jasper
- Voyageurs
- Isle Royale
- Yosemite
- Kings Canyon
- Sequoia
- Cuyahoga Valley
Of those, 8 parks were new for me and 12 were new for Anthony.
Nights
Totals
I stayed in a total of 30 different places in 2019 and Anthony stayed in 29 different places. I took a work trip to Georgia without him that got me an additional place. The most nights we spent in one place was our house at 267 nights for me and 264 nights for Anthony.
We spent 7 nights camping in 4 different places:
- Crowders Mountain State Park
- Carvers Gap
- Congaree National Park
- Cane Creek Park
The most common place we stay outside of our house were hotels with 54 nights for Jacqueline and 57 nights for Anthony. Of that, 34/37 nights were for work. We had 14 nights in Airbnbs and 16 nights at houses of friends and family.
I slept outside of our house for 98 nights while Anthony slept outside our house 101 nights. Anthony had an additional trip to Pennsylvania which gave him extra nights.
Superlatives
The most consecutive nights I spent in one place was 51 nights at our house from October to December. Anthony took a trip to Pennsylvania in October, so the most consecutive nights he spent in one place was 46 at our house from January to February.
The most nights we spent at a place outside of our house was 17 for me and 21 for Anthony, both at the Embassy Suites Philadelphia/Valley Forge (our favorite place to stay when we travel for work).
The most consecutive nights we spent not at home was 21 on our Canada trip over the summer.
Flights
Totals
I flew a total of 12,653 miles on 21 segments to 5 unique destinations. Anthony flew a total of 13,547 miles on 23 segments to 5 unique destinations:
- Cleveland

- San Jose
We spent no nights on airplanes last year.
Superlatives
Our longest flight was 2,125 miles from Los Angeles to Charlotte. Our shortest flight was 308 miles from San Jose to Los Angeles.
Road Trips
We only counted road trips that weren't day trips. We took many day trips to go hiking in the North Carolina/Virginia/South Carolina region which aren't included as part of this. We don't track number of miles hiked but we wish we had—maybe this year we will.
Totals
I drove 5,882 miles on 7 different trips and Anthony drove 5,396 miles on 6 different trips:
- Charlotte to Atlanta (Jacqueline only)
- Charlotte to Fayetteville
- Louisville to French Lick
- Minneapolis to Jasper
- Charlotte to Charleston
- San Jose to San Francisco/Yosemite/Sequoia
- Solon to Columbus
Superlatives
Our longest road trip including destination stops was 3,454 from Minneapolis to Jasper. This included stops at many national parks in the US and Canada:
- Theodore Roosevelt
- Glacier
- Waterton Lakes
- Banff
- Jasper
- Voyageurs
- Isle Royale
- Apostle Islands
Our longest road trip not including destination stops was 1,278 from Jasper to Fort Frances with a stop overnight in Regina. The most miles we drove in a single day was 708 from Jasper to Regina.
Our most unique road trip destination was to French Lick, Indiana to celebrate my grandma's 90th birthday.
Final thoughts
I'm a little sad we didn't visit any new countries in 2019, but it was a great travel year for us. We took a huge three week long road trip and saw some amazing national parks in the US and Canada that we had never been to before. We're looking forward to more amazing travels in 2020 where we get to add a new continent to our list!
